Implementation of ecosystem monitoring relative to the removal of the Costa Concordia.
Description of the activities
The Costa Concordia removal operations could have an impact on the marine environment. And thus, there was the need to prepare and implement an environmental monitoring plan to check the quality of the various environmental matrices relative to the wreck and the site activities. Therefore, ambiente s.c. has been performing chemical, microbiological and Eco toxicological analytical activities of the water inside the ship since November 2012 in order to verify the absence of spills with substances potentially impacting the ecosystem. Monitoring activities of the external environment of the site were performed as well. Specifically, monitoring concerned marine waters external to the wreck, sediments on the site, posidonia and fish fauna relative to the surrounding area. In addition to these autochthonous matrices, monitoring tasks with natural allochthonous accumulators (mussel watch) and synthetic accumulators were carried out (DGT: Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films). All sampling and analysis activities will continue until the complete removal of the wreck and the complete restoration of the former status quo. -
