RECLAMATION & THE REHABILITATION PLAN FOR THE GROUNDAWATER BODIES LOCATED IN THE MUNICIPALITY PIANA DI SCARLINO

Description of the work
ambiente s.c designed the groundwater reclamation intervention in Piana di Scarlino with the objective of reconstructing the hydro-geological and hydro-chemical structure of the Casone di Scarlino industrial area. The activities started with collecting, organizing and processing the extensive existing data. Afterwards the works continued by identifying the anthropogenic source of the groundwater heavy metal contamination.

Articulation of the activities
The project supports the development of the environmental reclamation of Piana di Scarlino groundwater.
This process is divided into the following subsections:

• Hydro-geological modelling;
• Water quality assessment;
• Screening & assessment of existing plant technologies in the area;
• Reclamation project desing.

In brief, the reclamation of the groundwaters was subdivided as follows:
PHASE 1: implementation of a hydraulic barriers system on waterbed 1, and waterbed 2 by means of a monitoring network which utilises the existing wells/piezometers.
PHASE II: after a phase of census and inspection of irrigation and drinking water wells on the plain, design for possible future cementing of unsuitable wells.
