PERFORMANCE MONITORING OF ELECTROMAGNETIC POLLUTION AT THE POLYGON SALTO DI QUIRRA (PISQ) JOINT FORCES
Description of the work
ambiente s.c. was responsible for the monitoring of electromagnetic pollution at the Polygon Salto di Quirra (PISQ), the largest military area in Italy equipped for testing the most modern and sophisticated weapon systems and performing training in the use of arms for air, naval and land use. The base covers an area of 11,600 hectares in the province of Ogliastra, in the south east Sardinia. The tender for environmental monitoring of the military site was issued by NAMSA (NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency), the agency that supplies NATO, on behalf of the Italian Air Force.Articulation of activities
ambiente s.c. was responsible for monitoring the electromagnetic pollution present in the area of the military site.
A demanding job, also by virtue of the significant number of sources of potentially polluting substances at PISQ, such as continuous wave radar installations or pulsed marine radar equipment for the simulation of electronic warfare and UHF, VHF, teledestruction transmission systems
In carrying out this important task, ambiente s.c. was supported by the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa under the supervision of Professor Augustine Monorchio. The activities were divided into four work phases:
Phase 1 – Preliminary study of the site for the examination of emissions
Phase 2 – Theoretical assessment of the electromagnetic fields through the simulation scenarios using a specific environmental software
Phase 3 – Measurement of electromagnetic fields in the areas close to the transmitting antennas and in areas used by staff and the civilian population,
Phase 4 – Drafting of the final report with the results of the measurements and the final evaluations of the electromagnetic impact with respect to the staff and the local population. -
Design and drafting of studies in the fields inherent to physical atmospheric agents, measurements of the emissions, electromagnetic field systems
